How is a light and airy photographer going to write a blog post about different editing styles? I asked myself that question and chuckled because I’m obviously partial to my own style. However, I want to spend some time talking about the different editing styles that are most popular in the photography world right now.
I would say there are three main styles happening right now (right now being 2025):
Each of these styles has its own strengths. In this post I will use images that I took while second shooting a wedding at Canyonwood Ridge. I edited each image to be reflective of the editing styles I’ll touch on.
Firstly, let’s talk true-to-color images. This style is tried and true. It is timeless and no one will regret getting images done in this style. It is beautiful in its simplicity and focuses on the subjects with a no-nonsense kind of directness. Also, it focuses on realism with a polished and clean finish. The purpose of this style is to give an accurate depiction of the scene in front of you. It is about artistically simple documentation, not about frilly art. True-to-color has to be beautiful on its own. This is because it isn’t getting any help from the emotional push that comes from the other styles. This is a beautiful, timeless style.
The next major photography editing style is the dark, moody, and warm style. This style uses darker tones to create a deeper emotional response. It does that really well. It is characterized by deep, rich tones, strong contrast, warm and nostalgic tones, dark lighting, and an emotional, intimate feel. I think it is a preferred style for people who find themselves consistently loving neutral tones. This style is trendy and beautiful. Some photographers really nail this style and make absolutely breathtaking work.
However, I don’t think it’s an editing style that works well for the masses. In terms of wedding photography, its biggest drawback is that it will not showcase your colors well unless they are warm and neutral. However, if you want really emotive images that make you think and feel more deeply, this style does that really naturally. The photographers who do this style well can get the most amazing and dreamy close-up detail shots.
Last but certainly not least, we come to “light and airy,” which is my style. It is based on Fuji Pro 400H film, and it is DREAMY. Light and airy images are soft, romantic, and timeless. It is characterized by bright, natural light, soft colors and pastel tones, and emphasizes an ethereal, fine art feel. This style works well in many scenarios, but is absolutely stunning in wedding photography and portraiture. What I love about light and airy images is the way they take a moment that is already beautiful and amplify that beauty. The added brightness also lifts the spirit of the person viewing the image and makes you feel happier looking at it. It’s what the world looks like in my daydreams.
These three major photography styles are each unique and stunning in their own ways. This is especially true when the photographer understands their editing style thoroughly. No matter what style resonates with you, find a photographer that fits your vision. They should have tons of experience and love their clients.
